Starting just about 45 minutes delayed, the motion for R1 is
"This House would require people to work in return for welfare payments."
In one room, there are meeting two Oxford teams one from Cambridge, and one from GSU (Turkey). Yay!

I don't want to be mean, but I'm going to stick my neck out and predict that the Russian team don't win that room
Unfortunately, seconded.
It always sucks when you end up in the randomly drawn 'super rom' inthe first round. The unfairness of it all is crippling!
But then again, I guess it means teams (one would assume are) less good, get to see teams (one would assume are) better teams.
Swings and roundabouts.
Actually I think GSU are Turkish (Galatasaray). I think you'll be surprised, they could get something from that round...
Oh and Jens, thank you as always for your efforts to keep those of us in distant climes informed!
Keep up the good work, Jens! Great to see that you're blogging Euros again!
Not a very original motion, but a decent one to start with. Well-chosen wording, including the 'payments'.
ps Let's judge debaters on their speeches rather than their universities. Every debater deserves a fair and unbiased judgement, especially at prestigious tournaments such as Euros. Even if you're not from Oxbridge.
jens, joining to okar, thanks for the posts.
by the way, still expecting a point or points :) from gsu, I think they will not kick off with a high motivation.
engin.
GSU is Turkish, apologies. I corrected the post. From past experiences I would agree with Can that this can be a great and very insightful excercise for that team.
I don't have the result of that room yet, but I'll tell you as soon as I know.
