Motion analysis R4

This proved to be a relatively difficult debate, because of the different status quo jurisdictions in different countries. Mine was an all-British debate, but still there was quite an amount of confusion about such things as "punitive damages" or the way that disposable income is taken into account next to other things as guilt, damage done or remorse in finding a decent judgement.

Many teams struggle with debates in which there usually is a "reasonable" status quo, and they now have to argue the extremes. That doesn't mean that this was a bad motion, it only means that these debates are hardly ever breathtaking.

An interesting point was raised in my debate about progressive taxation and how that was justified, even though it probably wasn't all that relevant for this debate: The equivalent of an fine relative to wealth would probably be a flat tax - and even then it still is a difficult analogy.

OK some Turkish news, after round 4.

Koc A (Ozan Mert Ondes/Can Talaz) - 7 points
METU A (Nisan Su Aras/Dilay Kurtulus) - 6 points
Galatasaray A (Isil Yelkenci/Gulsah Ekiz) - 6 points
Galatasaray B (Engin Arikan/Berk Cin) - 5 points
Koc B (Arda Gitmez/Suleyman Onay) - 4 points

All these teams are in with a solid chance of an ESL break. I'd anticipate 12 for the ESL break with some 11s given the slightly smaller size of the tournament. 14 should do it for the main break but Koc A's 4th in the last round might have put them out of contention for that.

Still, not going too badly for the Turks so far - an omen for tonight I hope!

Cheers Can.

Jens, I agree that the SQ is virtually always a problem even in non-international tournaments. It's even worse in international ones!

My friend and I were recently talking about the prevalence of technology in our day to day lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as memory becomes less expensive, the possibility of copying our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I daydream about almost every day.
